Baileys Harbor - S.T.E.A.M. Mystery Bag

STEAM Mystery Bag

Spring STEAM - The Mystery Bag Design Challenge Returns

After a successful first year, the March STEAM Mystery Bags are coming back to Baileys Harbor! Available for pick up at the Library throughout the month, everyone is welcome to enjoy hand-on learning and engineering fun. Those who complete the project by the end of the month will receive a certificate of completion along with a display of their creations at the Library.

STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. It is a concept that has been gaining popularity with professions in these fields impacting economic growth and job creation. The library Mystery Bag activity is an engaging way to showcase and grow the talent in our community.

Each bag has challenge, such as creating a device to attract attention or building a habitat, along with a range of items provided for you such as cups, paper plates, string, straws, rubber bands, brass fasteners, egg cartons, and more inviting creativity in problem solving.

Designers may use any or all of the items in the bag (including the bag itself), and they can combine the recycled materials using scissors, glue, or tape. Tracy Opper, Branch Manager, hopes to ignite curiosity and creativity. “I was looking for something that kids or anyone could do over Spring Break, especially those that don’t travel and are looking for things to do. They can work on it at the library or at home, and bring it back to display and receive a certificate.”

Bags are being distributed starting March 1.
Baileys Harbor branch winter hours are Monday 10-4,
Wednesday 1-7, Friday 10-4, and Saturday 10-1.

In addition to the Mystery Bag event, the library branches throughout Door County host a number of activities that invite a STEAM approach. Lego Builders Club meets monthly on the first Saturday from 1:00-2:00pm at the Sturgeon Bay branch. The Maker’s Space in Egg Harbor features tech toys, hands-on craft events throughout the month, along with a Lego creation challenge. And the weekly Kids’ Story Times in Forestville, Egg Harbor, Washington Island, Ephraim and Sister Bay often involve craft building activities. Visit our Calendar to learn more and find events near you.
