Door County Library Celebrates Earth Day 2019

Earth Day is an event observed annually on April 22. It is a day held to demonstrate and promote environmental awareness and calls for the protection of our planet. Earth Day is celebrated in more than 193 countries each year, and we are celebrating throughout the month of April with programs that inform, instruct, and inspire.

Book Discussion: 'Hidden Life of Trees' by Peter Wohlleben — Copies of the book are available in regular print book via the online catalog: InfoSoup.org, or on Hoopla (e-book and e-audiobook) or Overdrive/Libby (e-book and e-audiobook), and it is also being read on A Chapter A Day on NPR. Participants and listeners are welcome.

Repair Cafe: Hand Sewing Don't throw your clothes away, fix them! Join us for hand sewing basics with Char Mueller. She will go over basic stitches for clothing repair and also how to sew on a lost button.  She will touch on sewing machine basics. Container Gardening 101 — Don't have a yard or don’t want to do a big garden? Not to worry! You might have a window or a balcony you can use instead. This class covers what you need to know to successfully grow food in containers! You will learn about keeping plants healthy in a container, what you can use as a container, and how to create a plan for the space you have. Come join us and learn how to start a garden on your balcony or small yard space. This is a free program hosted by the Egg Harbor BookNook Gardens and the Seed Library. (Film) SEED: The Untold Story — In partnership with the Wisconsin Public Television Reel to Real program and the Door County Seed Library, we will be screening the film, followed by a short discussion.  View the film and join the movement to preserve seeds by checking them out from the new seed library in the library in Sturgeon Bay.

Story Time: Books to Grown On — Come enjoy stories and fun with Miss Beth for babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and their parent or caregiver. Enjoy specially-themed stories each Tuesday, and stay afterward to talk with other parents while the children play together.

Every Day is Earth Day Festival Open House — Join us on Saturday for a day of talks, films, and exhibitors curated to help you make your life Earth-friendly. With topics ranging from ‘How to Eliminate Plastics in the Home’ to ‘Identifying Native Birds,’ a Bird Presentation by Open Door Bird Sanctuary, and eight different films selected by Sustain Door, plus nearly 20 earth care exhibitors. Sponsored by the Door County Seed Library and BookNook Gardens.
